BOOK OVERVIEWS: This book is the result of many years of experience of the authors in guiding physics projects. It aims to satisfy a deeply felt need to involve students and their instructors in extended experimental investigations of physical phenomena. Over fifty extended projects are described in detail, at various levels of sophistication, aimed at both the advanced high school, as well as first and second year undergraduate physics students, and their instructors. Carrying out these projects may take anything from a few days to several weeks, and in some cases months. Each project description starts with a summary of theoretical background, proceeds to outline goals and possible avenues of exploration, suggests needed instrumentation, experimental setup and data analysis, and presents typical results which can serve as guidelines for the beginner researcher. Separate parts are devoted to mechanics, electromagnetism, acoustics, optics, liquids, and thermal physics. An additional appendix suggests twenty further ideas for projects, giving a very brief description for each and providing references for pursuing them in detail. We also suggest a useful library of basic texts for each of the topics treated in the various parts.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: This book identifies and emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to school improvement when it comes to both the development of the whole child and the relationships among student, family, and community development. In recent years, the emphasis in PK-12 education in the United States has been on the measurement of student and school performance by high-stakes achievement tests. This emphasis has resulted in a narrowed curriculum emphasizing lower-level cognitive learning, with little attention paid to the moral, social, and creative development of students, families, and communities. This book argues that PK-12 education needs to shift its focus to holistic qualities of the successful school, qualities that reflect a moral rather than a technical approach to education while also improving students’ academic performance.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: This text contains 25 Project-Based Learning (PBL) lessons written by a combination of undergraduate preservice teachers, inservice teachers, and graduate students. Everyone who wrote a chapter strives to improve STEM education to help others implement standards-based STEM instruction that takes learning in isolation to greater accountability through integrated and meaningful tasks that answer the question every teacher dreads: When am I going to use this? The PBLs were written to implement in middle and high-school classrooms. All of them are interdisciplinary in nature. We have divided them into six themes: construction and design, water, environment, mixtures, technology, nutrition and genetics. Each lesson contains a “schedule at a glance” and the “well-defined outcome” so you can quickly see how a particular PBL fits into your curriculum. Objectives are listed along with STEM connections written as objectives. We have included all materials needed and then each day of activities including an imbedded engagement, exploration, explanation, evaluation (including rubrics), and extension. We have tried to include everything necessary for successful implementation. This practical book is the perfect companion to the handbook for learning about implementing PBLs: Project-Based Learning: An Integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Approach – second edition.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: Fearing the loss of Korea and Vietnam would touch off a chain reaction of other countries turning communist, the United States fought two major wars in the hinterlands of Asia. What accounts for such exaggerated alarm, and what were its consequences? Is a fear of the domino effect permanently rooted in the American strategic psyche, or has the United States now adopted a less alarmist approach? The essays in this book address these questions by examining domino thinking in United States and Soviet Cold War strategy, and in earlier historic settings. Combining theory and history in analyzing issues relevant to current public policy, Dominoes and Bandwagons examines the extent to which domino fears were a rational response, a psychological reaction, or a tactic in domestic politics.

Category: Science Books

BOOK OVERVIEWS: The book consists of a brief introduction, a foreward provided byprofessor Danishefsky of Columbia University, and about 14 –16 chapters, each written by one or two eminent scholars/authorsdescribing their recent research in the area of either dominoreactions or intramolecular rearrangements in carbohydratechemistry. Three or four chapters will be reviews. The domino (cascade, tandem)reactions are always intramolecular. They are usually very fast, clean and offer highly complex structures in a one pot process.Intramolecular rearrangements offer very similar advantages andoften lead to highly complex products as well. Although manyrecently isolated carbohydrates fulfill various sophisticatedfunctions, their structures are often very complex. The editorscover the broadest scope of novel methodologies possible. All thesynthetic and application aspects of domino/cascade reactions areexplored in this book. A second theme that will be covered isintramolecular rearrangement, which is also fast, stereoselective, and often constitutes one or more steps of domino /cascade process.Selected examples of intramolecular rearrangements are presented.Together, both processes offer an elegant and convenient approach to the synthesis of many complex molecules, which are normally difficult to synthesize via alternative routes. It appears that domino and intramolecular rearrangements areideally suited to synthesize certain specific modifiedmonosaccharides. What is particularly important is that bothprocesses are intermolecular and almost always yield products withvery well-defined stereochemistry. This high definition isabsolutely crucial when synthesizing advanced, modified mono andoligosaccharides. The choice of contributors reflects anemphasis on both therapeutic and pharmacological aspects of carbohydratechemistry.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: We live in a highly connected world with multiple self-interested agents interacting and myriad opportunities for conflict and cooperation. The goal of game theory is to understand these opportunities. This book presents a rigorous introduction to the mathematics of game theory without losing sight of the joy of the subject. This is done by focusing on theoretical highlights (e.g., at least six Nobel Prize winning results are developed from scratch) and by presenting exciting connections of game theory to other fields such as computer science (algorithmic game theory), economics (auctions and matching markets), social choice (voting theory), biology (signaling and evolutionary stability), and learning theory. Both classical topics, such as zero-sum games, and modern topics, such as sponsored search auctions, are covered. Along the way, beautiful mathematical tools used in game theory are introduced, including convexity, fixed-point theorems, and probabilistic arguments. The book is appropriate for a first course in game theory at either the undergraduate or graduate level, whether in mathematics, economics, computer science, or statistics. The importance of game-theoretic thinking transcends the academic setting—for every action we take, we must consider not only its direct effects, but also how it influences the incentives of others.
