BOOK OVERVIEWS: The Reptile-Mammal Transition is one of the richest and most compelling cases for macroevolution (the origin of novel forms of life). The proof is to be seen not only in the many fossils that have been found, covering millions of years, but also with the evidence of developmental biology and contemporary genetics. How do those skeptical of evolution (whether creationists or those favoring "Intelligent Design") deal with all that evidence? They don't. And you'll be able to see that because "Evolution Slam Dunk" covers them all, clearly and in full detail. Whether you're a science educator wanting a new resource to defend the teaching of evolution in class, or just curious to know what the facts are, you'll all be brought up to speed on the evidence. The Reptile-Mammal Transition is OUR story, after all. It's part of how we humans came to be.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: A fast-paced, heartfelt story for basketball fans that proves being a good teammate remains the most important quality in basketball--and in life, from New York Times bestselling author Mike Lupica. Wes' father always told him that there was only one ball in basketball. That you had to know when to take it yourself and when to give it up, that finding the right balance was key. So at every practice and game, Wes tries his best to be a good basketball player and, above all, a good teammate. As the season kicks off, Wes finds that not everyone on his team has the same idea. All-star player and the Hawks' point guard, Danilo "Dinero" Rey seems determined to hold the spotlight and the ball, even if it means costing his team the game. If Wes is to lead the Hawks to the playoffs, he'll need to find new ways to dish out an assist--even if it means his most important one comes off the court. In No Slam Dunk, #1 New York Times bestseller Mike Lupica demonstrates once again that there is no children's sports novelist today who can match his ability to weave a story of vivid sports action and heartfelt emotion. A touching story about teamwork and family, of selfishness and generosity, No Slam Dunk shows that even in the face of adversity, giving your best is the surest way to victory. Praise for Mike Lupica: -"Lupica is the greatest sports writer for middle school readers."--VOYA on True Legend -"Lupica will win a Pulitzer for his sportswriting one day (he should have won it already)."--The New York Times on Heat

BOOK OVERVIEWS: Grand Slam Theory of the Omniverse: What Happened before the Big Bang? is more than a theory of how the universe began. It is the realization of a larger reality from which its creation was made possible. It is the perception of a universal consciousness as it begins to awaken to its true surroundings. Our universe is rooted in a bigger reality, which it must overcome. As we shall see through our modern scientific context, this new model of something greater than the universe will help us solve the mysteries about our universe that we have sought throughout the ages. This is the Omniverse. Modern science has given us accurate predictions, precise mathematical theories, and countless observations to shape our view of the universe. Throughout the years, discoveries made were like pieces of a puzzle. Some of the latest pieces include the July 4, 2012 observations of the Higgs boson and dark matter. Like separate pieces of a puzzle, we shall see how each part fits together to complete the picture. The Omniverse is the big picture. It is the puzzle pieces arranged together to form the model. The model of the Omniverse is actually quite simple. It consists of a diagram small enough to write on a Post-it note. But what it means to us is huge. It is the universe’s path to ascension, described as the Grand Slam. If our entire universe is just the size of a baseball, then picture the stadium, parking lots, and surrounding areas as higher dimensions of the Omniverse. The Omniverse is more than just a new scientific proposal. It is information that awakens us to greater surroundings followed by a new era of scientific discovery. This model will have us dropping assumptions of what humanity knows thus far and realizing infinite possibilities.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: Force Point (Fp) Counting will help you to count your hand directly in contract tricks (the tricks that are above the initial 6 tricks, which are not counted in the game of bridge). The Fp Counting itself is a new low of the Total Tricks, much better than the old one. The sum of both hands contract tricks, yours and your partner, will give to you the game's Play Level (PL). No need evaluations by the time of the initial count, but one of you, who will ask his partner to reveal the exact distribution (between around 500 possible distributions), must apply some tricks' adjustments when a new distribution changes are discovered by the time of the Bidding. When you discover partner's exact shape, you will ask for the exact number of the contract tricks, thus finding your exact PL. Then if the PL = 5.5 you must ask your partner for all of the TOP Honors. With Fp you will be able to discover all of the partner's Aces + Kings + Queens with one only question - one answer! No other bridge system is capable of doing that! Then you have to calculate the final PL, and may ask your partner where are the TOP Honors or directly to choose the final contract. The calculations are for a 7 grader, so the difficult decisions in the game of bridge proved to be a simple arithmetic, not even a math. Using one only SCOR-SCOR Convention for all of your Distribution and Control needs (along with the classical Stayman, of course) will allow to you to see transparently the exact cards and lengths of the suits of your partner before the attack. The Playing is your own responsibility, I can only assist you about the Bidding. On Bidding Contests with 12 TOP Matchpoint scoring, Fp will provide to you no less than 70% (usually close to 80%), but pay attention that on such Contests you will have to bid most difficult distributional games collected around the world. For the love of the Game Force Point Bidding Developer: Mr. Pawell Boiew

BOOK OVERVIEWS: This book presents the development of SLAM-based mobile robot control systems as an integrated approach that combines the localization, mapping and motion control fields, and reviews several techniques that represent the basics of the mathematical description of wheeled robots, their navigation and path planning approaches, localization and map creating techniques. It examines SLAM paradigms and Bayesian recursive state and map estimation techniques, which include Kalman and particle filtering, and enable the development of a SLAM-based integrated system for the inspection task performed. The system’s development is divided into two phases: a single-robot approach and multirobot inspection system. The book describes an original approach to 2D SLAM in multi-floor buildings that covers each 2D level map, as well as continuous 3D pose tracking, and views the multirobot inspection system as a group of homogeneous mobile robots. The last part of the book is dedicated to multirobot map creation and the development of path planning solutions, which allow the robots’ homogeneous behavior and configuration to be used to develop a multirobot system without theoretical limitations on the number of robots used.

Read Mapping, Planning and Exploration with Pose SLAM book online. Mapping, Planning and Exploration with Pose SLAM by Rafael Valencia,Juan Andrade-Cetto, the book is categorize as Technology & Engineering book. Read More »
BOOK OVERVIEWS: This monograph introduces a unifying framework for mapping, planning and exploration with mobile robots considering uncertainty, linking such problems with a common SLAM approach, adopting Pose SLAM as the basic state estimation machinery. Pose SLAM is the variant of SLAM where only the robot trajectory is estimated and where landmarks are used to produce relative motion measurements between robot poses. With regards to extending the original Pose SLAM formulation, this monograph covers the study of such measurements when they are obtained with stereo cameras, develops the appropriate noise propagation models for such case, extends the Pose SLAM formulation to SE(3), introduces information-theoretic loop closure tests, and presents a technique to compute traversability maps from the 3D volumetric maps obtained with Pose SLAM. A relevant topic covered in this monograph is the introduction of a novel path planning approach that exploits the modeled uncertainties in Pose SLAM to search for the path in the pose graph that allows the robot to navigate to a given goal with the least probability of becoming lost. Another relevant topic is the introduction of an autonomous exploration method that selects the appropriate actions to drive the robot so as to maximize coverage, while minimizing localization and map uncertainties. This monograph is appropriate for readers interested in an information-theoretic unified perspective to the SLAM, path planning and exploration problems, and is a reference book for people who work in mobile robotics research in general.

Field robots are robots which operate in outdoor, complex, and dynamic environments. Service robots are those that work closely with humans, with particular applications involving indoor and structured environments. There are a wide range of topics presented in this issue on field and service robots including: Agricultural and Forestry Robotics, Mining and Exploration Robots, Robots for Construction, Security & Defence Robots, Cleaning Robots, Autonomous Underwater Vehicles and Autonomous Flying Robots. This meeting was the fifth in the series and brings FSR back to Australia where it was first held. FSR has been held every 2 years, starting with Canberra 1997, followed by Pittsburgh 1999, Helsinki 2001 and Lake Yamanaka 2003.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: MORE THAN EIGHT YEARS ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST The extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, “nothing short of spectacular” (Entertainment Weekly) memoir from one of the world’s most gifted storytellers. The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family. The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered. The Glass Castle is truly astonishing—a memoir permeated by the intense love of a peculiar but loyal family. The memoir was also made into a major motion picture from Lionsgate in 2017 starring Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE • A panoramic revisionist portrait of the nineteenth-century invention that is transforming the twenty-first-century world “The real feat of this book is that it takes us on a ride—across the centuries and around the globe, through startling history and vivid first-person reporting.”—Patrick Radden Keefe, New York Times bestselling author of Empire of Pain The bicycle is a vestige of the Victorian era, seemingly at odds with our age of smartphones and ride-sharing apps and driverless cars. Yet we live on a bicycle planet. Across the world, more people travel by bicycle than any other form of transportation. Almost anyone can learn to ride a bike—and nearly everyone does. In Two Wheels Good, journalist and critic Jody Rosen reshapes our understanding of this ubiquitous machine, an ever-present force in humanity’s life and dream life—and a flash point in culture wars—for more than two hundred years. Combining history, reportage, travelogue, and memoir, Rosen’s book sweeps across centuries and around the globe, unfolding the bicycle’s saga from its invention in 1817 to its present-day renaissance as a “green machine,” an emblem of sustainability in a world afflicted by pandemic and climate change. Readers meet unforgettable characters: feminist rebels who steered bikes to the barricades in the 1890s, a prospector who pedaled across the frozen Yukon to join the Klondike gold rush, a Bhutanese king who races mountain bikes in the Himalayas, a cycle-rickshaw driver who navigates the seething streets of the world’s fastest-growing megacity, astronauts who ride a floating bicycle in zero gravity aboard the International Space Station. Two Wheels Good examines the bicycle’s past and peers into its future, challenging myths and clichés while uncovering cycling’s connection to colonial conquest and the gentrification of cities. But the book is also a love letter: a reflection on the sensual and spiritual pleasures of bike riding and an ode to an engineering marvel—a wondrous vehicle whose passenger is also its engine.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: The aim of this book is to provide the reader with an overview of New Zealand's international relations. It is a country that has often shown an international presence that is out of proportion to the modest spectrum of national economic, military and diplomatic capabilities at its disposal. In this volume, the editors have called upon a range of specialists representing a range of views drawn from the worlds of academia, policy-making, and civil society. It is an attempt to present a rounded picture of New Zealand's place in the world, one that does not rely exclusively on any particular perspective. The book does not claim to be exhaustive. But it does seek to present a more wide-ranging treatment of New Zealand's foreign relations than has generally been the case in the past. BOOK OVERVIEWS: This book is the sixth volume of the successful book series on Robot Operating System: The Complete Reference. The objective of the book is to provide the reader with comprehensive coverage of the Robot Operating Systems (ROS) and the latest trends and contributed systems. ROS is currently considered as the primary development framework for robotics applications. There are seven chapters organized into three parts. Part I presents two chapters on the emerging ROS 2.0 framework; in particular, ROS 2.0 is become increasingly mature to be integrated into the industry. The first chapter from Amazon AWS deals with the challenges that ROS 2 developers will face as they transition their system to be commercial-grade. The second chapter deals with reactive programming for both ROS1 and ROS. In Part II, two chapters deal with advanced robotics, namely on the usage of robots in farms, and the second deals with platooning systems. Part III provides three chapters on ROS navigation. The first chapter deals with the use of deep learning for ROS navigation. The second chapter presents a detailed tuning guide on ROS navigation and the last chapter discusses SLAM for ROS applications. I believe that this book is a valuable companion for ROS users and developers to learn more ROS capabilities and features.
