BOOK OVERVIEWS: Amanda Hocking is an indie publishing sensation whose self-published novels have sold millions of copies all over the world, and Switched is the book that started the phenomenon. Prepare to be enchanted... When Wendy Everly was six years old, her mother was convinced she was a monster and tried to kill her. Eleven years later, Wendy discovers her mother might have been right. She's not the person she's always believed herself to be, and her whole life begins to unravel—all because of Finn Holmes. Finn is a mysterious guy who always seems to be watching her. Every encounter leaves her deeply shaken...though it has more to do with her fierce attraction to him than she'd ever admit. But it isn't long before he reveals the truth: Wendy is a changeling who was switched at birth—and he's come to take her home. Now Wendy's about to journey to a magical world she never knew existed, one that's both beautiful and frightening. And where she must leave her old life behind to discover who she's meant to become... As a special gift to readers, this book contains a new, never-before-published bonus story, "The Vittra Attacks," set in the magical world of the Trylle.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: The increased efficiency and quality constraints imposed on electrical energy systems have inspired a renewed research interest in the study of formal approaches to the analysis and control of power electronics converters. Switched systems represent a useful framework for modeling these converters and the peculiarities of their operating conditions and control goals justify the specific classification of “switched electronic systems”. Indeed, idealized switched models of power converters introduce problems not commonly encountered when analyzing generic switched models or non-switched electrical networks. In that sense the analysis of switched electronic systems represents a source for new ideas and benchmarks for switched and hybrid systems generally. Dynamics and Control of Switched Electronic Systems draws on the expertise of an international group of expert contributors to give an overview of recent advances in the modeling, simulation and control of switched electronic systems. The reader is provided with a well-organized source of references and a mathematically-based report of the state of the art in analysis and design techniques for switched power converters. Intuitive language, realistic illustrative examples and numerical simulations help the reader to come to grips with the rigorous presentation of many promising directions of research such as: converter topologies and modulation techniques; continuous-time, discrete-time and hybrid models; modern control strategies for power converters; and challenges in numerical simulation. The guidance and information imparted in this text will be appreciated by engineers, and applied mathematicians working on system and circuit theory, control systems development, and electronic and energy conversion systems design.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: In recent years it has become apparent that knowing the average atomic structure of materials is insufficient to understand their properties. Diffuse scattering in addition to the Bragg scattering holds the key to learning about defects in materials, the topic of many recent books. What has been missing is a detailed step-by-step guide how to simulate disordered materials. The DISCUS cook book fills this need covering simple topics such as building a computer crystal to complex topic such as domain structures, stacking faults or using advanced refinement techniques to adjust parameters on a disordered model. The book contains a CDROM with all files needed to recreate every example given using the program DISCUS. The reader is free to follow the principles behind simulating disordered materials or to get down into the details and run or modify the given examples.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: Recently, there has been an increasing focus on various biological and physical systems known as "active matter". Examples of such systems range from individual units, such as motile cells or artificial self-propelled particles, to large systems of interacting active particles or individuals. The emergence of large-scale collective motion, as exhibited by flocks of birds or bacterial colonies, is just one prominent and fascinating example of self-organization in active matter systems. In this work, we discuss different individual-based models of active matter using the concept of active Brownian motion. The first part of this work explores the dynamical behavior of single active particles with a particular emphasis on the impact of so-called active fluctuations. The second part extends the scope of this study to interacting active Brownian particles and their collective behavior. First, a systematic derivation of kinetic equations for active Brownian particles with velocity alignment is presented. Further on, motivated by recent biological observations, a new type of "escape-pursuit" model of collective motion is introduced and successfully employed in modeling collective locust behavior.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: This book covers the technology of switching or modulating light in semiconductor optical waveguides. Currently a key function for optical communications systems is the conversion of data from an electrical signal to an optical signal for transmission in very low loss optical fibres and the converse process of optical to electrical conversion the O/E/O data conversion. This conversion between electronic and photonic signals imposes an energy consumption overhead on optical communication systems. So many research workers have been attracted to ultrafast all-optical switching of data in different formats. As a way of introduction to all-optical switching in semiconductor waveguides the book covers the electro-optic effect, electroabsorption and electrorefraction; effects that can be used in semiconductor optical modulation devices. But the book focuses on all-optical switching using second and third order optical nonlinearities in AlGaAs optical waveguides. It covers a variety of device configurations including integrated nonlinear couplers and Mach-Zehnder interferometers. Further, it provides design software in suit of Mathematica notebooks that can be used to explore the device design.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: This book’s title gives it to you straight: it’s about how the collapse of 2008 brought Keynes back with a bullet. Taylor’s principal aims are, first, to show how ineffective and inappropriate are the dominant approaches to macroeconomics of the past 30‐40 years (which have been succinctly summed up as “pre-Keynesian theory after Keynes” ); and, secondly, to show how Keynes and post-Keynesian writers, whose ideas in recent years have been greatly downplayed and even ridiculed by the bulk of the profession, contain the proper bases on which to erect both understanding and effective policy proposals.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: Switched linear systems have enjoyed a particular growth in interest since the 1990s. The large amount of data and ideas thus generated have, until now, lacked a co-ordinating framework to focus them effectively on some of the fundamental issues such as the problems of robust stabilizing switching design, feedback stabilization and optimal switching. This deficiency is resolved by this book which features: nucleus of constructive design approaches based on canonical decomposition and forming a sound basis for the systematic treatment of secondary results; theoretical exploration and logical association of several independent but pivotal concerns in control design as they pertain to switched linear systems: controllability and observability, feedback stabilization, optimization and periodic switching; a reliable foundation for further theoretical research as well as design guidance for real life engineering applications through the integration of novel ideas, fresh insights and rigorous results.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: This book presents new methods of circuit design for guitar electronics, based directly upon U.S. Non-Provisional Patent Applications. By systematic construction of unique series-parallel circuit topologies, the author shows how many series-parallel circuits are possible, including non-matched single-coil pickups, humbucking pickups, and humbucking combinations of matched single-coil pickups. This allows designers to avoid unnecessary and confusing duplicate circuits in pickup switching systems. It shows how electromechanical switches cannot produce the maximum number of tones for more than 2 or 3 pickups. Thus the author discloses an efficient micro-controller and cross-point switch architecture to replace mechanical switches, and allow access to the maximum number of tones. The discussion continues, developing humbucking circuits for odd numbers of matched single-coil pickups, extendable to any odd or even number, greater than 1, using a simplified switching system with very simple rules. It abandons some tones in favor of producing all-humbucking and unique tones, no matter what the switching choice. The author discloses both mechanical and digital switching versions. Then, based on using humbucking basis vectors, the author discloses variable-gain circuits that duplicate all possible switched humbucking tone circuits, and produces all the continuous tone gradations in between. The presentation includes analog and digitally controlled systems. The object of all the disclosures: give the guitarist or pianist a system which allows going from bright to warm tones and back, without ever needing to know which pickups are used in what combination.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: Since the publication of the first edition of Fundamentals of Digital Switching in 1983, there has been substantial improvement in digital switching technology and in digital networks. Packet switching has advanced from a low-speed data-oriented switching approach into a robust broadband technology which supports services ranging from low-speed data to video. This technology has eclipsed the flexibility of circuit switching. Fiber optic cable has advanced since the first edition and has substantially changed the technology of transmission. to research in optical devices to find a still better means of This success has led switching. Digital switching systems continue to benefit from the 100-fold improvement in the capabilities of semiconductor devices which has occurred during the past decade. The chip industry forecasts a similar escalation in complexity during the next 10 years. Networks of switching systems have changed due to regulatory policy reform in many nations, including the breakup of the Bell System in the United States, the introduction of new types of carriers in Japan, competition in the United Kingdom, and a reexamination of public policy in virtually all nations. Standards bodies have been productive in specifying new capabilities for future networks involving interactive and distributive services through STM and A TM technologies.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: The switched reluctance machine (SRM) is the least expensive electrical machine to produce, yet one of the most reliable. As such, research has blossomed during the last decade, and the SRM and variable drive systems using SRMs are receiving considerable attention from industry. Because they require a power electronic converter and controller to function, however, successful realization of an SRM variable drive system demands an understanding of the converter and controller subsystems and their integration with the machine. Switched Reluctance Motor Drives provides that understanding. It presents a unified view of the machine and its drive system from all of its system and subsystem aspects. With a careful balance of theory and implementation, the author develops the analysis and design of SRMs from first principles, introduces a wide variety of power converters available for driving the SRM, and systematically presents both low- and high-performance controllers. The book includes an in-depth study of acoustic noise and its minimization along with application examples that include comparisons between ac and dc drives and SRM drive. The result is the first book that provides a state-of-the-art knowledge of SRMs, power converters, and their use with both sensor-based and sensorless controllers. Switched Reluctance Motor Drives enables both students and engineers to learn all aspects of SRM drive systems and appreciate the interdependence of the various subsystems in performance optimization.

BOOK OVERVIEWS: Diploma Thesis from the year 2002 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: 1,0, University of Dortmund (Lehrstuhl für Hochfrequenztechnik), 39 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Next generation optical communication systems will be characterized by increasing data rates, high signal powers and dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM). In future-optical networks channels will be routed through complex, meshed networks (ASTN, Automatically Switched Transport Networks, ITU-T Recommendation G.808 0/Y.1304). These networks will be able to setup transparent optical paths without converting the optical signals to electrical signals. In all-optical networks the physical impairments and degradation effects play an important role. There is a multitude of degradation effects like dispersion, noise, crosstalk, fiber nonlinearities, polarization dependent loss, etc. To enable a fast setup and the best choice of one of the available paths, the signal quality along the whole transmission distance has to be evaluated very fast. Ideally, only a single figure of merit (FOM), e.g. the bit error rate (BER), will be computed, which incorporates all degradation effects. Therefore it is important to characterize the different physical impairments analytically. Signal distortions can be measured by an eye opening penalty (EOP) and degradation effects due to noise by the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR). The goal is to find and calculate these impairments from the signal parameters (modulation format, data rate, duty cycle, channel spacing, etc.) as well as the route parameters (fiber lengths and parameters, EDFA powers, etc.). Due to the need of fast routing algorithms, time-consuming numerical methods or a complete system simulation are not practical. In addition, it is not possible to linearly accumulate the different degradation effects. The focus of this work is to find analytical or heuristic formulas for each degradation effect. These approximation formulas are compared to the results obtained from a complete simulation of a reference system with the help of the simulation tool PHOTOSS.
